A breathtaking mural inspired by the ocean has recently been completed in Kaikōura, adding a vibrant new feature for locals and visitors to enjoy along the Whale Trail.
Local artist Mary Ashwell has transformed a small KiwiRail building situated near the Kaikōura helipad, behind Whale Watch, into a stunning piece of public art. The mural brings to life a design created by 15 year old Mae McFetrish, whose watercolour painting of a pāua shell entwined with sea creatures won a community competition earlier this year.
"This mural is a celebration of Kaikōura’s natural beauty and marine heritage," said Mary Ashwell. "It’s been a joy to bring Mae’s vision to life in such a public space where it can be appreciated by so many people."
The mural was made possible thanks to KiwiRail, which sponsored the project and Equus, who generously provided the paint.
"Projects like this show how art can elevate community spaces," said a KiwiRail spokesperson. "We’re proud to support initiatives that enhance public areas and highlight the unique stories of the regions we serve."
The Whale Trail team also celebrated the mural’s completion. "This project reflects the essence of the Whale Trail—bringing communities together and celebrating the rich environment and culture of the places it connects," said Project Manager Nigel Muir.
The mural is already drawing attention, providing a memorable visual landmark for trail users while showcasing the incredible creativity within the Kaikōura community.
