From Ward, the trail is entirely off-road.  You head south meandering through farmland and cabbage trees to the picturesque Mirza Creek.  A gentle descent brings you to the Waima river clip on bridge. After following the creek for a short distance, the trail winds uphill through cabbage trees, climbing 117m up to the top of Single Hill. From here you can see North up the coast to the Needles, or South towards Kaikoura. 

More winding trail takes you down the southern side of the Single Hill to the Waima River. The trail then winds along the coast and through the sand dunes to a suspension bridge over the Tirohaunga Stream, after which it runs along the seaward side of the railway line to Kekerengu.
